A Name Like No Other

Our four-year-old daughter just informed us that she doesn’t “want to be named Kate anymore.” She wants to be called “Velvet, Velvet Gold.” I’m not sure where a name like that will take her but it is hard to imagine. “Paging Dr. Gold, paging Dr. Velvet Gold” or maybe “In Johnson vs. Noland, Chief Justice Velvet Gold wrote the majority opinion stating that… .” With a name like that we will definitely have to steer her clear of a career in the entertainment industry.

I think she might have heard your old moniker of “Trusty Justy” and decided her own name was in need of that same sort of friendly-casualness. I’ll be happy to call her Velvet Gold and I might even go with V.G for short.

    Derek,

Kate is mighty obliged by your kindness in accommodating her. As for good ol’ “Trusty Justy” I seem to recall that name was given to me unwillingly and only after some time did I reluctantly accept it. Incidentally, “Trusty Justy” was on the short list for the name of this blog.
